There has always been a debate in the art world how closely linked together are fashion and art. In almost every painting from the beginning of art history depicting people, garments, clothes and accessories are shown. Fashion influences and imitates art and art influences and imitates fashion. These two social phenomenons along with architecture, literature and cinema, expresses their time, and show us what a human hand is capable of creating, at a specific point in time.
There is an old saying that goes “Art is the only salvation from the horror of existence.“ It was true during the neolithic era, the Julius Caesar’s Rome, the Victorian ages; it is even true today. In this times, ruled by our free will, we are led to believe that we can do anything we wish we could. Well, we actually can’t. We can’t do graffiti. Graffiti are forbidden and punishable. Therefore by any legal means, graffiti are crime.
There are two things to know about me : I’ve always loved black and white photography and I’m an avid admirer of the 1920’s and 1930’s. The glamour, the jazz, the fashion, the lifestyle!
It was an ordinary Tuesday afternoon when I, looking for a little adventure, found myself in front of a gallery and saw a sign near the door that read “Czech Avant-garde Photography (1920-1939) Open Now”. You can probably imagine my excitement!
The one that caught my eye and made a deep impression was the work of Jaromir Funke.
Two timeless social phenomenons, both adaptable to changes and both expressing their time. Fashion and Art. Mothers of an aesthete.
I fell in love with them from my early days, back in the time when my mom used to read me stories and I asked her to show me our “History of Art” encyclopedia.
And there I stumbled across one painting that took my breath away even though it was a print in a book. Her majesty, The Kiss by Gustav Klimt.
Two social phenomenons, both expressing their time. Two different things that go so well together like coffee and newspaper in the morning. Or tea, whichever you prefer 😉
Fashion and Art. Nothing inspires Fashion more than Art, and Art is the best way to express Fashion. Perfect combination. They have one major thing in common – they both use fabric as their tool.
I decided to write something like this because from very young age, I admire these two subjects, and growing up I realized their link. This is my first post with this title, but I will write more, because they both are endless inspiration to me.
