The American Affair – #RalphLauren50

America – The land of opportunities. How does one achieve their big American dream? By wearing it, of course.

America came quite late in the world of design and fashion, but quickly managed to became one of the world’s most prestigious trendsetters’ cradle. New York, the big city of dreams, with its fast and furious lifestyle, is the place to be if you want to succeed. Everybody’s tryna make an impact of the world we live in, and the best place to do that is in New York. The modern capital of the world.

And what combines Great Gatsby, Annie Hall, The Central Park and New York? The answer is Ralph Lauren, a Bronx native, whose fashion empire was born exactly 50 years ago at a men’s ties store. Drawing on his interests in sports, Ralph Lauren named his first full line of menswear “Polo” in 1968. One year later, the Manhattan department store “Bloomingdale’s” sold Lauren’s men’s line exclusively. It was the first time that the New York Fashion Mecca had given a designer their own in-store boutique. We got introduced to the women’s line and the polo player emblem in 1971. In 1974 he did the outfits for the male cast of “The Great Gatsby”, and in 1977 Woody Allen and Diane Keaton wore only Ralph Lauren clothes for their Oscar-winning film “Annie Hall”. After that film, women started wearing a lot more suits. And the rest is a history…

On September 7th 2018, in Central Park, New York, Ralph Lauren invited over 300 guests, every one of them has a piece of the Big Apple in them. Martha Stewart, Oprah Winfrey, Blake Lively, Michael Kors, Vera Wang, Alexander Wang, Pierce Brosnan are just a few. He presented his Fall 2018 Ready-To-Wear collection, which was an ode to American fashion in the last 50 years. Modern and vintage made love and this collection was the result. In each of his looks, you can see the American spirit, the comfortable, the sporty, the boho. It has everything, from velvet, to cowboy boots, to puffer vests. There are a lot of american designers, each and everyone of them so talented, but there’s only one king of New York and its peoples’ everyday street style, and his name is Ralph Lauren.
